PARTY PICTURES is an ‘unlimited’ edition of shiny, colorful 1" pins with the URL partypictures.estherswhite.net printed on the rim.
The photos that make up PARTY PICTURES are neither portraits nor documentary. They are difficult to decode. They are pictures of moments between gestures — full of signals.
The PARTY PICTURES pins subvert the traditional use of a pin, burying and obscuring information rather than promoting an idea, political message, or personal meaning.
The PARTY PICTURES website is a three-by-four grid of pictures devoid of titles or captions. Clicking on an picture re-shuffles the grid, revealing and re-configuring. The design encourages the viewer to draw comparisons and look for relationships between images, asking “Which of these things is not the same?” The compositions, placed side-by-side, create exquisite corpses out of the pictures’ subjects, as elements repeat themselves and are truncated by the photo’s frame.
Interacting with the website does not put a viewer any closer to the meaning or message of the work. Like the project’s “real life” component, the website does not have a discrete meaning.
PARTY PICTURES prompts an aimless search for meaning driven by eyes, minds, and cursors.
