Fabric Artists’ Books

Book works exploring memory, touch, and identity.

Esther S White, Nerve Graft, 2016, printed and dyed, fiber-reactive dye, cotton muslin, machine sewn stab-binding, 10.5″x12″, 16 pages, unique
Esther S White, Untitled (Baby Book), 2016, printed and dyed, fiber-reactive dye, xerox transfer, cotton muslin, machine sewn stab-binding, 12″x12″, 8 pages, unique

Untitled (Baby Book) and Nerve Graft were both made from a single piece of dyed fabric, folded, bound, and then finally cut to release the pages. The pages are not hemmed or finished, leaving a frayed edge that will continue to develop over time.

Nerve Graft was made shortly after my sister underwent a procedure to remove a facial nerve tumor.

Untitled (Baby Book) is part of an ongoing series of works that deal with parenthood made while I am an Artist in Residence in Motherhood.

Esther S White, Untitled (Soft Book), 2016, hand-marbled cotton muslin, saddle-stitch binding (machine-sewn), 9.5″x13.5″, unique

Untitled (Soft Book) was recently purchased by the Special Collections of the Fleet Library at Rhode Island School of Design.
